When to leap off this sinking ship March 14, 2013
Everything comes in ebbs and flows, even for her, who so
desperately needed an ego boost and apparently got what she needed.
As the smallest and most insignificant fish in a pool full of
sharks, she seems to be constantly looking for a way to stand out, and did this
week, though the question remains how she can maintain it.
She seems to have come back to where she started and may
well account for the positive shift in tone in her most recent poems.
Her recent successes have allowed her apparently to begin building
a network of powerful men and women from whom she might be able to draw on for
a rebirth. This is far different from her days in the past when she depended on
the good will of others. While her current gig may have started out with the
Virgin Mayor feeling sorry for her, she seems determined to make it into
something all her own, a power base that won’t depends on RR or his mirror image
The Private Detective in the town next door.
Some of the players she brought together for her women’s
conference bridge the political divide, some even aligned with the Congressman
and the Small Man, who might otherwise distrust her.
Again, I wonder, is this the peak, or can she find another
level to rise to?
Back when she was with the band, she was basically eye
candy, someone the band allowed to play because her husband was a member. Watching
those videos of those performances was somewhat painful since she was
performing music that wasn’t her music, and you could almost see her aching to
want to break out into something that was uniquely her own.
But when she tried – her first solo performance was in 2007
while still technically tied to the band – her career didn’t take off the way
one might have expected to, the way – considering her amazing talent – it should
have, and, she largely abandoned it, except for a brief appearance here and
there, and a few songs recorded at home, turning her attention to some other
career she thought she might advance in.
The problem here is despite this success, there really isn’t
a future for her in the political realm, where the really powerful are either
elected or are those who raise money.
As amazing an accomplishment as her women’s day event was,
it doesn’t by itself advance her, unless she somehow manages to connect with
some of these powerful people, to find a role with them who clearly have a
pathway to greater success.
RR and even the Virgin Mayor really aren’t on their way
anywhere. They have reached the pinnacle of their success, and for both, the path
is a downward spiral, a slow one if they are lucky, a quick dip if the court
case against the mayor works against him.
She really does need to leap from this sinking ship, and it
has to be a point when things are going well for her, not later, not when everybody
is leaping off like rats.
