Bad feelings Feb. 17, 2012
They put in the new phones yesterday at both the main office
and its annex, a final step that will require the annex editor to move to the
main office.
What started at an act of revenge against her for daring to ask
for a raise turned into a plan of action that can’t possibly end up well.
Management sees the annex editor as the last of the unexploited
workers they have to put under their thumb before they get on with their real
business of imposing our pay cut to pay for their new magazine.
This exploitation has taken a toll on the staff. Fran,
perhaps the most exploited of all the workers, went into surgery yesterday for
a collapsed lung. She worked on and on, hacking the whole time, but did not see
a doctor until she collapsed.
And even then, she brought a laptop computer to the hospital
with her, returning to the office too early after her release to cause a
relapse.
Yannet is slated for surgery as well, the woman who answers
the phones, sends advertisers their copy, types up letters to the editor as
well as press releases, needs to have her gall blatter removed. Management
doesn’t want her to go.
We have two pregnant women in key position who will leave
shortly, and this gap in positions promises to create even more bad feelings among
an already exhausted staff.
Many of us are upset by the rumor that management plans to furlough
us to reduce our salaries in order to fund the creation of one or two new
magazines.
Our female boss tried to use her own ailment as leverage,
telling us about her breast cancer just prior to making the announcement she
may have to cut our salaries.
I feel sorry for her, but I hate her exploiting her illness.
She said she’ll be out of the main office for six weeks for surgery, recovery
and treatment, leaving us in the hands of our male owner – something I fear
will lead to even more bad feelings.
